IPv6 Considerations
- Is it time to turn on IPv6?
- Is it on already?
- Does my hardware* support?
- Your vendor (Cisco, Palo alto, Juniper etc) make dedicated chips for hardware accelerated routing.
- ASIC takes those forwarding needs and offloads them to a dedicated chip.
- At what level is it supported in your device?
- Not the same level of performance in all devices
- Does my ISP support?
- Does my application support?
- Do mu clients support?
IPv6 Cellular
- Heavy penetration
- Seamless upgrade
- Dual stack
- A public IPv6 address and a private IPv4 address
- Backwards-compatible
Security Concerns
- NAT is gone
- IPv4 ACLs have no effect
- ICMP is required
- Think about more granular permit or deny individual message types
- Limitations on hardware support
- Maybe we support routing but we do not support ASIC
- See if they have any performance characteristics
- Limitations on application support
- May have limited support for IPv6
- Troubleshooting is more complex
- Some applications use IPv4 and others use IPv6
- There could be routing issues affecting one of the applications
