RIP Introduction

• RIP is among the most basic dynamic routing protocols
• Simple hop-based metric
  • Traffic comes in and we send that packet out to a new link
  • Every time this happens there is a layer 2 rewrite
  • Which means every envelope is unique from router to router
• No formal adjacencies
• Widely supported
  • We just shout out the window and hope someone is listening
• Low resources requirements

• RIP v1
  • Classful
  • Broadcast
    • Everybody gets the message
• RIP v2
  • Classless / VLSM
  • Multicast
    • Everybody who is interested will get the message
    • It is more efficient
  • Authentication
    • Beware malware
    • Be sure that is somebody that we trust
• RIPng
  • IP version 6
  • This is the newest generation of RIP

• It is slow, sends messages every 30 seconds
