Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
RIP Introduction
- RIP is among the most basic dynamic routing protocols
- Simple hop-based metric
- Traffic comes in and we send that packet out to a new link
- Every time this happens there is a layer 2 rewrite
- Which means every envelope is unique from router to router
- No formal adjacencies
- Widely supported
- We just shout out the window and hope someone is listening
- Low resources requirements
Versions of RIP
- RIP v1
- Classful
- Broadcast
- Everybody gets the message
- RIP v2
- Classless / VLSM
- Multicast
- Everybody who is interested will get the message
- It is more efficient
- Authentication
- Beware malware
- Be sure that is somebody that we trust
- RIPng
- IP version 6
- This is the newest generation of RIP

- It is slow, sends messages every 30 seconds
