Small Office / Home Office (SOHO)

• Usually 1-10 users

  • You typically have a single logical network but VLANs gives us the ability to create separation between our devices.
• Relatively simple configuration

Enterprise LAN

• Hundreds or thousands of users
• Servers/Clients
  • We have to make sure that everything is running at any time
  • Have resiliency mechanisms in place for the network to not be interrupted
  • Provide resiliency mechanisms both through physical and software tools.
• Voice over IP (VoIP)
• Storage Area Network (SAN)
• Many Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs)
  • Give us the ability to isolate different departments
  • Provides security.
  • When we create these VLANs, each VLAN is gonna be in a different subnet. So if you have 10 VLANs, you have 10 subnets as well
    • Each subnet is a different addressing block and the router will provide communication between those VLANs (technically probably a layer 3 switch does the job).
