Metropolitan Ethernet
- Often handled by a single local service provider
- If we want to connect offices together over the Internet.
- Basically building a separate infrastructure from our internet traffic to talk between the two offices
- Lease you some of that fiber and just connect the office together
- Your traffic is not Internet traffic.
- Independent from Internet access
- Traffic engineering
- Local traffic through one gateway, internet traffic through another gateway
- Guaranteed bandwidth
- Service-Level Agreements
Implementation Methods
- Ethernet
- Q-in-Q
- When we sent ethernet frames, those ethernet frames do not have any type of VLAN association with them
- Tags make sure the frame is care as it should be by the service provider.
- The costumer VLAN is or first Q1 tag
- The service provider definition of the customer, this is basically the Costumer ID.
- Each frame has a different tag on it.
- "Carry a trunk through our service provider"
- Layers 2 MPLS
- Multiprotocol Label Switching
- MPLS is newer to 20 bit label
- It can process labels very very fast
- A more modern solution
- Each layer 2 network is typically its own subnet
- Layer 3 MPLS
- If its okey that they are on different subnets, you can use layer 3.
- It is just a matter of how you would like the traffic to look like between the two sites.
