• Layer 1 device
• Extend networks beyond 100m limit
• Examples:
  • Fiber (MMF or SMF) to Ethernet
  • Fiber to coaxial
    • Bringing ethernet in and going out with something that is not ethernet
    • On switches you would see some ports called SFP module
      • Small Form-Factor Pluggable
        • Socket that accepts a module that does whatever that you need to do.
