New WiFi Router
- Example with WiFi 6 capable router.
Firmware Update
- Look at the documentation
- You sometimes can utilize a mobile device
- Historically you had to have a dedicated computer in order to log in and configure everything
- Now you can do your initial configuration from your phone
- Turn in the ISP supplied router, back into the ISP and instead run your own router.
2.4 & 5 GHz Antennas
- Tuned to work at specific frequencies
- If we look at them
- It says rear or it says side.
- Make sure you are putting the right antennas on the right location
Initial Setup
- Once you log in, you scan to find your router.
- Once you put in the right password your device will start the setup
Initial Configuration
- If you give the same name and password of your old network, it will join all the devices connected to the old network to the new network.
Router Tips
- You can give access to the internet in an Internet only state
- Station to station access is going to be blocked
- That means one device cannot communicate with the other device through WiFi in the same network
- One device can only go out to the network
- This is usually what you want in a Guest network
- You can apply parental control
- You can apply policies to each of these devices
Updating Firmware
- You do not want any software vulnerabilities
- In this case we are checking for new firmware.
- From your mobile router app you can sometimes do speed tests.
- Smart Connect enable you can move from 2.4 to 5 Ghz just depending on your network conditions and performance.
WPA 3 & TCP-IP
- Better approach
- All your client devices need to support it.
- We'll usually create multiple SSIs, one for security, and another for legacy devices with no WPA3 capability
