Mobile Asset Deployments
(OBJ 4.1)
Three Main Mobile Device Deployment Models
- BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
- Employees use personal devices for work
- Cost-effective for employers
- Drawbacks include reduced control over security and device management
- In BYOD, employees own and control the security of their devices
- Personal devices must undergo security checks and have specific software for protecting company data
- Organization might not have the ability to manage or update the device for users, or enforce stricter s
- Example:
- Use your own smartphone to access work emails and even use specialized applications
- One smartphone for both their personal and business use
- COPE (Corporate-Owned, Personally Enabled)
- The company provides devices for employees
- Allows the employee to actually use the device for personal use too.
- Greater control over security and standards
- Higher initial investment
- COPE standardizes device management but may be expensive for employers providing devices to staff
- Employees may have privacy concerns or need to carry two devices
- Personal data being put on that COPE device.
- Opt instead to just have two different cell phones.
- CYOD (Choose Your Own Device)
- Offers a middle ground between BYOD and COPE
- Employees select devices from a company-approved list
- Balance between employee choice and organizational control
- Example:
- Your employees can chose from 4 different smartphone options: 2 different iPhone models, and 2 Android options.
- Employees like this model because they can have a choice in the device they were going to use
- Our information technology department really enjoyed this because they only had to support four different models of devices from that chosen device pool.
- Similar drawbacks to COPE in terms of initial cost and potential privacy concerns
- You have to buy all of these devices
- Employees might still have privacy concerns and might opt on carrying two different devices.
Selecting the Right Model
-
Consider the specific needs, budget constraints, and risk appetite of your organization
-
Analyze costs, security, and employee satisfaction
- BYOD may have hidden costs for security and compatibility
- BYOD is cost-effective, but hidden costs may arise related to security and compatibility
- COPE offers more control over devices and supports MDM
- CYOD provides a balance between flexibility and control
- Provides optimal control over devices and enables management through the organization's MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution.
- BYOD may have hidden costs for security and compatibility
-
BYOD and CYO models are suitable for prioritizing employees' freedom and choice
