Fencing and Bollards
(OBJ 2.4)
Fencing and Bollard reason
- Fencing and bollards stand out as some of the most primitive tools that are employed to safeguard assets and people
Fence
-
Structure that encloses an area using interconnected panels or posts
- From wood, to metal, to concrete
- Quite ugly or tall
-
In terms of physical security, fences serve several purposes
- Provides a visual deterrent by defining a boundary that should not be violated by unauthorized personnel
- Establish a physical barrier against unauthorized entry
- Electrified fences
- Effectively delay intruders which helps provide our security personnel a longer window of time to react
- Gives us an extra five minutes to get the police
-
Fences provide us with a primary method at protecting from
- Trespassing
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Unauthorized facility access
-
Vulnerable to attack themselves:
- Susceptive to being cut
- Digging underneath
- Build a portion underground
Bollard
-
Robust, short vertical posts, typically made of steel or concrete, that are designed to manage or redirect vehicular traffic
- Very common in main streets and downtowns
- Placed in front of shopping areas or buildings with windows
- Sometimes made more appealing with decorations
- Think of Target balls - They are bollards!
-
Bollards are used to keep vehicles away from buildings so that if an IED explodes nearby, the building and people are safe
-
Purpose of bollards
- Create a physical barrier that shields pedestrians, structures, and other assets from potential vehicular collisions
- Serves as a secondary purpose as a clear visual reminder of where vehicles are not permitted
-
Bollards are not invulnerable
- Some attackers try to defeat a bollard by tampering with or removing it
-
Bollard ratings
- ASTM F2656-07 M30 P1
- Can stop a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling at 30 mph and not allow a vehicle to move for more than 1m after hitting
- ASTM F2656-07 M30 P1
Fences vs. Bollards
- Fencing is considered to be more adaptable and well-suited for safeguarding large perimeters around the entire building
- Bollards are really designed to counter vehicular threats in a specific area instead
- In summary:
- Fences prevent people
- Bollards prevent vehicles
